Patch IQ is a cloud based SCADA application for the upstream oil and gas industry. It is used to monitor and control equipment in the field. The software displays thousands of datapoints and alerts users to potential issues. The industry has its own set of guidelines to follow regarding user interface and user experience. This project presented many unique challenges due to these constraints.
Patch IQ had very specific requirements regarding design and user experience. Users had to be able to easily and quickly navigate the software to respond to issues quickly. A delayed response could have catastrophic consequences. Because of this, the design had to be very simple and straightforward. Things like color and interaction had very specific meaning and could only be used in certain circumstances.
As lead designer on this project, I worked closely with developers and product managers to design and prototype new features based on user feedback and industry standards. I created and maintained a design system featuring styles and components specific to the application. Using this system, I created high fidelity prototypes that demonstrated the desired behavior for developers to implement.
